This blog is about the move of Dawn and Ed to Denver, Colorado.

After Dawn has been living in the Netherlands for 5 years, we thought it was time to pack our stuff and make a move to Denver, Colorado. We choose Denver after a three month stay in 2001, we were there because of a job Ed was doing for Lucent Technologies. In May 2006, we decided to start Ed's greencard procedure and see how it would go from there.

We Bought a home!

It has been a while since we posted an update but it's been very busy. Ed is working at a company that provides IT services to hospitals and the pharma industry. He is loving it so we are finally getting settled.

It has been a bit sooner then we expected but we bought a house!!
Before we posted the area Beacon Point and also the home we were looking at. It was sold before Ed got his job so we decided to go with another model. It's a bit smaller 4400 sq ft (490 sq meter) on all floors together.

The lot we got is also different and has a backyard to the east which is popular here since it gets really hot during the summer. The front porch is then ofcourse to the west which is also excellent in the winter cause this will melt the snow. Our living room will be about 18 ft (5.5 Meter) high which will let a lot of light into the home.

Yesterday was the most exciting day of all, we were picking our colors and materials. Thank god we had the help of a designer to support us cause this could have gone horribly wrong. :-)

So this is what we picked:
The living room will have a Tile in all walk ways and in the kitchen and laundry room. The rest of the house has a new corn based carpet on which we get a 20 Year waranty and is not like normal petrolium based carpets bad for your health (we can use the warranty very well with our doggies).
In the kitchen we choose a cherry wood (these darker colors are also very popular in the US in opposit of the lighter colors we use a lot in Holland). The counter tops are granite to match the rest.

Below I posted some pictures to show the color scheme of the home and master bathroom.

Oh.. I forgot.. we got 3 bathrooms a toilet and will have a 4th bathroom in our large basement ;-)

If you guys like it send us a mail at --> mail@dawnandedgousa.com

Talk to you soon!!

Okay so here is the same home but we will have a different color and red bricks.

Here is the kitchen. Same colors on the cabinets we just picked other colors in the floor and countertop. Also, we have the "gourmet" kitchen which means we have a seperate double oven. What can I say... we got that for free ;-)

Here are 3 bad pictures of the study, dinnig room and living room. I will try to make new ones soon.

Then we have a picture of the lot which is about 12500 sq ft (1150 sq meters) and ends at the road. You can see that Dawn is pretty much on the edge of ours and our new neighbors.

And last I made a picture of a picture hanging at the builders office of the area. You can see the white peaks of the mountains in the back which is about 30 mins away. So not to bad at all for being on the east side of Denver.

Oh, and I forgot to say that this all will be done in December. So we might have christmas in our new empty home.....

Home Shopping

For the last 3 weekends we have been driving all over Denver metro area to find a place were we would be happy to live. Our favorite was the Meadows in Castle Rock about 30 miles (48 km) below downtown Denver. It's a old town where new communities are being build.

Till last weekend we were set on this areas but changed our mind. We loved Castle Rock and it's amazing views of the mountains and the beautiful community, but we found Beacon Point! Beacon Point is located in Aurora which is east from Denver and ofcourse it's the place where the sun rises. The beauty of Beacon point is that it's right on the Aurora Reservoir (where aurora's drinking water comes from) and the lot sizes are a bit bigger then Castle Rock offers them.

At this moment we are waiting for Ed to get a job and we have a courtesy hold on a lot 1 block away from the water. The lot is 13000 sq ft (1200 m2) and the home we are looking at is from the builder Engle Homes. The house itself has 2 floors and a large basement. The total sq ft is 5000 (464 m2). In Holland we don't really use this to estimate house sizes but it basically means that all 3 floors together cover 5000 sq ft.

I have posted some pictures below of where the lot is located and in inside of the model home we selected.

I used google maps to create picture of the location. In the right top you see it zoomed in.

Between these two homes is the empty lot which is available. The lot is 1 block away from the water.

The back of the model home and Dawn checking out the yard.

And this is the kitchen which we love the most!

Here we are in Colorado

Well, here we are. We spent 6 weeks in Idaho with Dawn's parents, visiting with friends and family and enjoying the time off. We had a great Christmas, and spent the New Years with Dawn's brother, sister and her husband in McCall, Idaho (a mountain town about 3 hours from where Dawn's parents live).

In Januray, after waiting and chasing for 2 weeks, our things finally arrived from Holland in Portland, Oregon. Dawn's dad took time off of work and drove with us to Portland to collect our things. Dawn's brother was nice enough to loan us his truck and her aunt was nice enough to loan us her horse trainer to make this trip a bit cheaper which was greatly appreciated.

Once we arrived back in Idaho with our things, we had time to get unpacked and reload up to head down to Denver. We arrived back in Idaho on a Monday, and left for Denver on that Wednesday. After staying a night in Utah, we arrived in the Denver area on Thursday evening and had to find us a hotel to stay the night. We spent our days looking for apartments to rent and on the third day, we were in luck. We found a nice one bedroom apartment in a nice apartment complex for a short term lease. Here are a few photos of our place.

Dawn was the first to get lucky and find employment. She is working for a local publishing company that produces books for other businesses, such as resturants, fast food resturants, convient stores, retails stores and more. She has been there for 3 weeks now and seems to be enjoying herself. Meanwhile, Ed is still busy looking for work. He has had several interviews, but several of the companies are taking their time with getting back to him with their feedback. While he waits for feedback, he continues to look for other opportunities.
